Psychological
Services
Do you feel constantly
stressed out, anxious or depressed? Are you painfully shy, or do
you worry all the time about trivial things? Do you sometimes think
that life is not worth living? Are you having trouble changing some bad
habits? If you answered "YES" to any of these questions, or if your doctor
has given you a diagnosis of depression or anxiety, you may want to work
on your problem with a licensed clinical psychologist. For more information
about psychology and how it can help, see www.cpa.ca.
Some
facts about the practice of psychology:
(also
see www.cpa.ca)
-
Psychology treatment is NOT
just sympathetic listening & giving advice. Therapy is an active
partnership, and the client is expected to practice new skills between
sessions. Psychologists use treatments that have been scientifically
proven to help problems such as depression and anxiety.
-
Psychologists don't just work
on mental health problems. We often work in general medical settings,
helping people cope with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.
We help people change their habits, such as smoking or nail-biting.

It is important to choose a
therapist carefully! A person with poor training may not know how
to choose or provide a treatment that is helpful. A bad therapist
can do harm: talk therapy is not "like chicken soup". Make sure that
you choose a therapist who is licensed by a professional organization.
Don't be shy to ask about the type of training the therapist has.
A good therapist will treat you with respect and compassion. For more information
about choosing a therapist see: www.1-800-therapist.com
